Web Site Basics

Note:  These are some basic explanations and steps that need to be taken for the Internet novice.  It is not intended to be all inclusive.  If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact me by going to our
"Contact Us" page and sending us an email.

There are basic actions that must be taken to have a live web site up and running on the internet

Choose and register your domain name

What Is A Domain Name?  Quite simple a domain name is strings of letters used to name organizations and computers and addresses on the internet.  It is also know as  a URL or universal resource locater.  A domain name or URL is used to find your web site on the internet.  A domain name is leased for a period of 1 - 10 years from a domain name registrar.  There is no set cost to register a domain name.  It varies from registrar to registrar.  The main thing to look for is a registrar with an excellent service reputation.  We have a reseller agreement with one of the largest registrars in the US because they are reasonably priced and have a reputation for being service oriented.  For your convenience we have provided a link to our sister web site www.templedomains.com for you to register your domain name.   We charge the same prices as they do.  Just click on the banner to the right.  Choose an availble domain name and register your domain name.  It is our recommendation that your register the site for 10 years.  As with any other Item, the price is subject to go up over time and you won't have to worry about your domain name expiring.  The last thing you want to do is have your domain name expire and be bought by someone else.

Acquire Hosting for your site.

What is hosting?   Web hosting is a service provided by either your web design company or a web hosting company. Many of your major ISP's (Internet Service Providers) also provide website hosting. Every website needs a place to reside so that viewers from around the world can see your website. This place is another computer that holds your files that create your website, which is especially built for hosting websites. These other computers are called Web Hosting Servers. The amount for hosting varies between companies.  We will assist you in getting the proper hosting with the proper speed and bandwidth for your site.

Get a Web Site.

There are as many ways to aquire a web site as there are people to acquire them.  Here are but a few with some positives and negatives for each.  It is our recommendation that you talk to us about your company, your needs and what you want to do with your site and we will help you determine which is the best choice for you.

1.  Some web sites are offered at a minimal monthly charge all you have to do is pick out a template.  The positive is that the sight is usually relatively inexpensive but changes are not easily made to the sight. (if at all)  So you wind up being stuck with a site that you don't really control or have control over.

2.  There are specialized sites that perform functions for a particular industry and they are industry specific but quite good.  The way these companies work is that they charge a hefty set  up fee and then a monthly fee for the year.  Next year you will pay a nother hefty maintenance fee in addition to your normal monthly fees.

3.  There are companies that will custom build you a web site with all the bells and whistles that you would like to have.  The  sights are usually quite good.  The negative is that unless you are very familiar with the state of the art software. such as dreamweaver, flash, frontpage, html, java, etc., you will have to go back to the developer or the webmaster each time a change is needed to the website.

4.  There are packages that you can develop with relatively liitle knowledge about programming languages.  Usually there is an assortment of templates to choose from.  You choose the template that you want for your site.  The negative is that many of the companies do not have a user friendly editor and it is quite cumbersome to develop the site and make chanhes as needed.   The positive is that you own the site and can do with it as you will.  However, with many companies the site is developed with proprietary software and you will be required to host your site with them.

5.  There are exponentially multiple combinations of all of the above.
